A comprehensive range of competitive sports are played in the forces, with competitions at all levels being organised through various associations and unions.
All servicemen & women who are keen to pursue a sporting interest can do so – whatever their ability. This includes the injured and disabled, who are able to participate through an initiative called Battle Back, where they train and compete alongside the able-bodied.
The best athletes go on to compete internally to represent their Service (Army vs Royal Air Force vs Royal Navy) and with civilian teams. Standards are high, many are already competing in open competition at international level with their sights set on the Olympics and Paralympics. An Army athlete – the rower Heather Stanning – is a double Olympic gold medalist and is also a two times World Champion.
To date there are over 100 serving sportsmen and women who have represented their country.
“Our military athletes are an elite and shining example of the flexibility and sheer determination we expect from our Armed Forces.”
Mark Francois MP – Minister for the Armed Forces 2014
